Digging in Fishmonger's Swallet
This gazetteer contains a summary of information about caves, fissures and rock-shelters in Great Britain that have contained human remains of possible or proven prehistoric or early historic date. The first version of this document was compiled and produced by Andrew T. Chamberlain, Jim Williams and Erika Strenski in 1999 and hosted on the website of the University of Sheffield, where it was updated in 2001. This fully updated version was compiled by Andrew T. Chamberlain in 2014 has been kept as up to date as possible since then and is now hosted by courtesy of the University of Bristol Spelaeological Society.
This version has been compiled as the original publications, in the online journal CAPRA, are no longer hosted and can no longer be updated. However, archive copies can still be found. For more details, including an index to articles published in CAPRA, please go to this page.
It is intended that we actively keep the information both accurate and up to date. If you know of any data that is missing or out of date, please contact either the compiler, Prof. Andrew Chamberlain or the editor Graham Mullan. For technical problems, broken links etc. please contact the editor.
Great Britain has been divided for convenience into seven regions and a full list of the sites in each may be found from the dropdown link at the top of this page.
Descriptions of the categories used in the various fields displayed for each entry may be found in the Glossary.
